Between Trujillo and Torrecillas de la Tiesa, just a 20-minute drive from our finca, lies an interesting steppe landscape. Rolling plains, covered with grasses and herbs and dotted with flocks of sheep and herds of cattle, form the setting for this guided tour.
We venture off the main roads in search of typical steppe birds such as great bustard and little bustard, black-bellied and pin-tailed sandgrouse, southern grey shrike and stone-curlew. Many small birds can also be found here, as well as species such as hoopoe and little owl. Especially in spring, the skies can be filled with the song of calandra larks. Crested lark and corn bunting are, of course, present, and with some careful searching we may also find short-toed lark. There is also a chance of encountering Montagu’s harrier or other pleasant surprises.
We also keep an eye on the skies, where vultures, kites and eagles patrol the plains in search of prey.
One thing is certain: this tour offers the chance to see many bird species — quite possibly new ones for you.
