In Search of Orchids

Half-day guided tour to the limestone hills around Almaraz
Price: €130 for two people
Includes: coffee/tea break

During the months of March and April, we offer a special orchid-focused guided tour, searching for the orchid species that are in flower at this time of year. Although Extremadura is not generally known as one of Europe’s richest orchid regions, many beautiful and often surprising species can nevertheless be found in a variety of locations.

Depending on temperature and rainfall, the best period for finding orchids is usually somewhere between mid-March and late April, although this can vary with altitude. For example, orchids in the Las Villuercas Geopark tend to flower somewhat later than in other areas.

One of the better locations is the area around Arrocampo, about a half-hour drive from Finca Las Abubillas. The soil here is rich in limestone — a condition that orchids particularly favour.

During the tour there will be ample opportunity to photograph the species we encounter, and Gertjan will be happy to assist with advice and practical guidance where needed.

The following species (Latin names) may be found during this period, although this list is certainly not exhaustive:

Ophrys tenthredinifera, Ophrys speculum, Ophrys lutea, Ophrys scolopax, Orchis italica, Orchis laxiflora, Orchis coriophora, Dactylorhiza elata, Orchis conica, Orchis morio, and various species and forms of the genus Serapias.

Naturally, we will also pay attention to other plant species during the tour.
