During this tour, our focus will be on the wetland area of Arrocampo. With the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant in view, this landscape is admittedly less scenic. However, birdlife here is abundant and highly rewarding.

It is one of the few places in this region with an abundance of water, which attracts a wide variety of waterbirds. Along the lakes, we will search for purple heron, squacco heron, little bittern and purple swamphen. This is also an excellent area to see or hear great reed warbler, Cetti’s warbler, Savi’s warbler and, with some luck, penduline tit.

The surrounding dehesa landscapes have a rich flora, largely thanks to the lime-rich soils. From early spring onwards, many orchids can be found here, including the bee orchid (Ophrys bombyliflora), Italian orchid and Ophrys lutea.

The dehesas are home to species such as red-headed shrike, hawfinch, black kite and booted eagle, while grey kite and Bonelli’s eagle also occur in this habitat. If weather conditions allow, part of the excursion will take place along unpaved tracks, offering an even better impression of this distinctive landscape.
